Changes to SMTP email authentication affecting Sage software - update

Written by CPiO Limited | Sep 11, 2024 8:00:00 AM

We wanted to bring you up to date on some changes regarding SMTP email authentication that may affect how you are sending emails from Sage software.

Google is deprecating Basic Authentication on Gmail, and Microsoft is deprecating Basic Authentication on Outlook.com. This means that if you use SMTP to send emails from your Sage software, via Outlook.com or Gmail, you will need to configure your Sage software and any connected services to use App Password functionality or send using Outlook.

Microsoft plan to change this from the 16th September 2024. Google plan to apply its changes from 30th September 2024. You can find more details and useful links here.

CPiO customers that have not yet made provision for these long-awaited changes can contact us via their account manager, who will be able to offer some advice.

How can I see if I'm using Basic Authentication?

The simplest way to see the use of Basic Authentication is to review the Azure AD sign-in logs.

  1. Log in to https://aad.portal.azure.com
  2. Click Azure Active Directory>Sign-in Logs
  3. Add a new filter choosing client app as the 'type'
  4. Select the 'legacy' authentication clients that you wish to review (start with them all)
  5. Click apply. This will load a list of accounts using Basic Authentication as well as the service they use.

CPiO Cloud customers should contact Hotline Support as part of their service provision.
